Verdict

Anima is a long-running companion app built around friendly chat, mini-games and a customisable avatar. Its yearly Premium plan is listed at $39.99, about $3.33 a month. Third-party reviews report patchy memory, with one seeing facts recalled in only 7 of 15 attempts, and sources disagree on whether voice notes, calls or video exist at all. Adult chat is a Premium option with no age check described, Anima's own pages give conflicting prices, the website names no legal operator, Mozilla flagged the app's privacy in 2024, and the iOS app is no longer on the App Store.

Overview

Anima is an AI friend and companion app at myanima.ai, launched in 2020. Its Android app is published on Google Play by LABANE CORP. Limited, a company listed in Cyprus that also makes iGirl and an Anima boyfriend app. The website footer names only 'Anima AI', and company databases disagree on the owner and head office. Anima runs in the browser and on Android. The site still links to an iOS app, but that app is no longer on the App Store. You can create companions with a chosen look, personality traits, voice, accent and backstory. The app also has mini-games such as Trivia, Truth or Lie and Would You Rather, proactive check-ins, CBT-style exercises and an XP and gifting system.

Sources disagree on media. Anima's video chat page says Premium unlocks animated video calls and voice notes, and the site links to a separate adult image generator. However, a November 2025 review found the app text-only, and Anima's own January 2026 blog says it works mainly through text. Memory is the weakness reviewers mention most. The companion keeps an editable Bio field and is said to learn your style, but Anima publishes no context length, and reviews say long histories are recalled unevenly. A July 2026 guide reports about 40 free messages a day. Roleplay, full customisation and NSFW content need Premium. The Android app is rated 'Everyone', and adult content is reported to be off by default.

Pricing

Anima's own blog (updated January 2026) lists Premium at $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year, about $3.33 a month. A November 2025 third-party review gives the same prices plus $19.99 for 3 months. Another third-party site (April 2026) lists $7.99 a month.

Anima's own pages do not agree on price. The blog that lists $9.99 also says in its FAQ that plans start at about $7.99 a month. Another official post gives daily rates of $0.67 (1 month), $0.49 (3 months) and $0.33 (12 months), which works out to roughly $20 a month or $120 a year. The price at checkout may vary by platform. Third parties have reported lifetime purchases of $69.99 to $99.99, but Anima does not list a lifetime plan. Refunds for app purchases go through Google Play (or Apple for the old iOS app), and web subscriptions are managed on the myanima website. One user said in 2023 that they were still charged after cancelling.

Privacy & safety

Anima has no known breaches. However, Mozilla flagged it in 2024 for tracking and weak security, the website does not name its operator, and Anima has published no clear statement on data retention or training on chats.

• SeriousMozilla's Privacy Not Included review (February 2024) gave Anima its warning label for extra data collection, ads shown without consent and weak security standards. A third-party review cites Mozilla counting 257 tracking signals in about five minutes of use.
• CautionThe website names no legal operator, and company records disagree on who owns the app. The official FAQ does not say how long data is kept or whether chats train AI models. A November 2025 review says chats may be used for training and found no way to fully delete chat history.
• NoteGoogle Play's data safety section lists collection of name, email, device IDs, app interactions and diagnostics, and says IDs and usage data are shared with third parties for analytics. Data is encrypted in transit, and you can request deletion. Anima names Google, Stripe and Azure as third parties and says it does not sell them user data.
• NoteNo data breaches, lawsuits or regulator actions involving Anima were found.

What users say

The Android app averages about 4.0 from 39,209 Google Play ratings (October 2026): roughly 23,000 five-star and 5,800 one-star. The old iOS app had a 4.4 rating before it left the App Store. User reviews, mostly from 2021 to 2023, praise supportive chat and roleplay but complain about memory lapses, odd or hostile replies and too little gained from Premium. The Trustpilot profile has no reviews, and Anima's own 4.8/5 ratings appear on its own blog, so independent feedback is limited. Third-party reviewers score it 3.8/5 (November 2025) and 6.5/10 (April 2026).
