Verdict
Replika is still the most polished single-companion app, with a 3D avatar, voice and video calls, and AR and VR modes. Romance needs a paid plan and explicit roleplay is not offered. A €5 million GDPR fine and confusing tiers keep it out of our top group. Pick it if you want a friendly, supportive companion, and look elsewhere for adult roleplay.

Score breakdown
ReplikaAverage of all 77 apps
Overview
Replika launched in 2017 and helped create the AI companion category. You get one companion with a customizable 3D avatar that lives in a virtual room. Text chat is free, and paid tiers add a romantic relationship status, voice and video calls, selfies, image generation and extras such as reading your Replika's thoughts. It also runs in augmented reality and on Meta Quest headsets.
Replika leans toward wellbeing, with check-ins, gentle nudges toward your goals and a Memory tab you can view and edit. A major 2026 rebuild added video calls with camera vision, internet access and image generation. Long-time users say the same update made their companions forget more and changed their personalities, which shows how much a single update can change a relationship you have built.
